Gurning

If you are sensationally ugly with an aggressively mobile face, then you stand a chance of winning the `Gurning' at Rocquaine Regatta, a wonderful timeless free-for-all, as the fishing boats in their finery of a thousand flags charge around the rock strewn bay in abandon. Only large quantities of Randall's local beer could give so much courage (or foolhardiness) but I have never heard of an accident. Any visiting yacht is impaled and sunk, even when piloted by the Temperance Society.

Speedboats, yachts, catarmarans, gin-palaces, dinghies, this is the place to `muck about in boats' par excellence. Excellent Marina's on the Eastern side of the Island and elsewhere  fishermen's harbours with tidal swing moorings. Ideally placed for a visit to France, return to UK, Madeira, Azores, Biscay, USA. At the mouth of the English Channel are the most dangerous waters on earth, huge tidal rises and falls, race currents, changeable weather - A  Real Yachtsman's Challenge. All facilities for repairs and stores available in St Peter Port or St Sampsons.

St. James is a venue for concerts, plays, and recitals of a very high standard. Beau Sejour is a Leisure Centre and host for Rock Concerts and/or film showing. Superb Hotels and Restaurants have Gourmet meals at modest prices. Local beer is brewed to the highest standard on Monday mornings, so good it has won many CAMRA prizes, one year the best of the British Isles. Many pints are downed in the numerous pubs, bars and clubs, legally now open half the night. There are public shows for agriculture, `County Shows' for the North, the South and the West in July and August. The East Show ceased when that bit of the Island fell into the sea. The North is `the Battle of Flowers'. There is also a St Peter Port Carnival. Clubs for every sport and pastime are all well attended and premises are of the highest standard. Three golf courses, football, rugby, cricket, bowls (indoor and out) tennis, sea rowing, swimming, cycling, athletics, motor sports, club shooting, equestrian everything , and windsurfing. There is an aero club from where you can train for your private pilots licence. But as yet no Ice Rink - people are working on that.
